rowing champs reward huge crowd

They came in their thousands to see six of New Zealand's newest world champions in action and they weren't disappointed.

Waikato University - with world champion Nathan Twaddle in the crew - regained the Harry Mahon Trophy after comfortably beating Washington University in the main race on Saturday. The win was sealed after Waikato won the battle for the favoured eastern side of the course.

The New Zealand women's eight, with four world champions in their midst, were too good for the Australian women's eight.

However New Zealand crews didn't have it all their own way, with the New Zealand eight beaten by a strong Australian crew.

After the racing was done, the crews, along with a host of Waikato's high society, attended the Great Race Ball at the Performing Arts Academy at Waikato University.
