Tough Olympic campaign will leave rowers ready for winning
A margin of five-hundredths of a second was all it took to see New Zealand rower Emma Twigg miss out on a place in the final of the women's single sculls at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
The race was so close that a photo finish was needed to identify third place.
George Bridgewater and Nathan Twaddle also rowed a tough race in the men's coxless pair, but a strong finish pulled them up to second, confirming their place in the final.
More tight rowing action is predicted on the Waikato River when Twigg and Twaddle return to row for the University of Waikato women and men's crew in the Gallagher Great Race.
Taking to the water on 7 September the University of Waikato men's crew will be looking to secure a third win over rivals Cambridge University (UK).
University of Waikato women's crew will be pulling for a win over first time challengers Sydney University.
The Gallagher Great Race is over the traditional 4.1 km course, starting at Anne Street. Race day kicks off with entertainment at 10am at Grantham Street, Hamilton.
