Cambridge crews to victory in indoor row challenge
Waikato Stadium saw action of a different sort last night with crews from the Gallagher Great Race competing on the indoor rowing machines in a pre-race warm up match.
The visiting Cambridge University crew took a clean sweep in the bow and stern races against the University of Waikato, over the 750m four-man erg race.
Nathan Twaddle, having recently returned from Beijing, cheered his team on from the sideline, choosing to conserve his energy for the Gallagher Great Race on Sunday.
Cambridge is the only university to ever beat Waikato in the seven year history of the Gallagher Great Race, and is eager to level the score board when they take to the water. The strength of the Cambridge crew on the ergs could mean an end is coming to Waikato's winning streak.
In contrast to their male counterparts, University of Waikato women rolled out two successes, showing their strength over Aussie rivals Sydney University. Emma Twigg, fresh from her Olympic campaign, aided the women's crew in a nine second victory.
Sydney was quick to say they were holding back for the big race day, with energy levels still dwindling after the King St Great Race Ball on Saturday night.
To simulate race action four rowing ergs are connected together, allowing for a team to collectively row and challenge the team sitting beside them. With the results projected onto a big screen supporters can see who is leading and who needs more encouragement.
With sunshine and some high cloud predicted for Father's day the river banks along the Grantham Street area will be jammed packed, with people and families enjoying the free entertainment.
Entertainment kicks off at 10am with the elite races beginning from noon.
