Waikato women win Great Race

Waikato University women's rowing crew have comfortably won The Gallagher Great Race while the men's team fell to Cambridge University.

The women's team easily won the 4.2 km Waikato River race having taken the lead over rivals Sydney University early in the race.

The men's team weren't so lucky having spent the race chasing Cambridge, who lead by as much as two boat lengths.

A final sprint resulted in the Waikato crew narrowing the gap on their European rivals, losing the race in the final seconds.

This is the second time the hosts have been beaten by Cambridge.
